What Are Basic Makeup Steps?

Posted by Hoan Nguyen on

So, everyone has their own makeup routine and you may be getting started on yours and wonder what are basic makeup steps. Some people skip the primer altogether, and some people forgo setting powder. It’s all about what works for you! In makeup, there’s no right way. Just your way.

With that said, wanna take a sneak peek at our normal routine, steps and all? You won’t be disappointed, and maybe you’ll even be inspired to change up your routine!

1. Face Primer

Once you cleanse your face, you’ll want to slap on some of our Thank Me Later Face Primer if you want your makeup to stay in place all day long. Smooth it over your “problem” areas (AKA the oily places) and gently rub it in with your fingers. Your foundation will be smoother than a baby’s bottom and stay longer than you thought it would.

2. Foundation

Next, grab your favorite foundation. Always remember that when it comes to foundation: less is more. You generally want to try and “build” up your coverage, because it’s easier to build-up to the coverage you want instead of overdoing it and having to wipe it all away to get a clean slate.

3. Concealer

Once your foundation is how you prefer it, up next is your concealer. First ask yourself this: how do you want your concealer to work today? Maybe you have some blemishes you want to cover up or maybe you want to brighten up your skin and strategically place your concealer to highlight areas like under your eyes to cover dark circles. Or even both!

4. Translucent Powder

This next step depends entirely on your skin type and preferences. Do you have oily skin that starts breaking up your makeup by 3 PM, or do you have drier skin where powders draw eyes to your scaly patches? If you’re oily or need to set a dewier foundation, opt for some translucent powder and dust it all over your face.

5. Bronzer

Who doesn’t love a sun-kissed look? Apply Whatup Beaches Bronzer to the hollows under your cheeks, your jawline, and your forehead. We even have options! Matte and Luminous shades that’ll warm up your look and keep your skin looking healthy.

6. Blush

Show Me Your Cheeks is up next. Smile, and then dust whichever shade speaks to you that day over the apples of your cheeks. A little color never hurt anyone!

7. Highlighter

One of my favorite steps—applying highlighter! Specifically, Show Me Your Glow Highlighter. Apply it just above your blush (basically on the tops of your cheeks). Lifehack time: if you feel like your blush and highlighter aren’t blending well, grab the same blush brush you used previously and blend them together without adding any extra color. Works like a charm.

8. Eyebrows

With this step, you’ll just shape your brows exactly how you like! For a more natural look, grab our Queen of the Fill Tinted Eyebrow Gel in your shade (we have 5!) and lightly comb it through your brow hairs. For a more polished look, use our Queen of the Fill Brow Pomade.

9. Eyeshadow Primer

Easy peasy. Use Thank Me Later’s eye primer and gently apply it to your lid. This makes sure the eye look you worked so hard on stays in place.
